Student Employment Experience Development

Providing quality experiential learning opportunities for students during the summer months.


The Student Employment Experience Development (SEED) program provides funding to create summer job opportunities for post-secondary students. The program provides selected students with a summer job of up to twelve (12) weeks in duration with a New Brunswick employer between April 29 and September 6, 2019.

Program objectives:

  • Provide a valuable work experience for students, experiential learning, mentoring and coaching;
  • Help students develop and build transferable skills and/or find employment in their field of study;
  • Provide a wage subsidy to employers to help them provide quality summer employment to students;
  • Enhance students' employment prospects upon completion of their studies; and,
  • Enable students to finance the continuation of their education.



A participant must be:

  • a resident of New Brunswick or a First Nation community in New Brunswick;
  • eligible to work in Canada;
  • a student in the current academic year and;
  • attending a post-secondary institution full-time in the fall.*
    *Note: grade 12 students are eligible if attending a full-time post-secondary institution in the fall.

Eligible employers:

  • First Nations communities
  • Municipalities
  • Non-profit organizations
  • The private sector *
    *Note: Some museums will receive funding for student employment outside of the SEED program and are not eligible for SEED funding. See list of non-eligible museums here.

Additionally, employers:

  • must be located in New Brunswick;
  • must have a business number from the Canada Revenue Agency for payroll purposes. Canada Revenue Agency contact information is available here.
  • must consult with Unions and ensure that placements are not in contravention with provision of the collective agreement (if applicable); and,
  • CANNOT be in the business of commission sales, pyramid-type selling, network marketing or telemarketing (e.g. 1-900 numbers).

Selection process

  • Once the application process is closed, eligible SEED applicants will be selected at random from the pool of registered applicants to ensure fairness and equal opportunity. Random selection will be divided by geography/sub-region to allow for equal geographical representation. A third party, non-governmental entity will provide validation for the random section process.
  • Selected participants will be notified and will receive a voucher by email by mid-April along with instructions on how to connect with registered employers.
  • Due to the large number of applications, some students will not receive a SEED voucher. They are encouraged to explore all summer work options in their region.

The placement

The placement must:

  • be up to eight (8) consecutive weeks for college and high school students and up to twelve (12) consecutive weeks for university students;
  • be completed by September 6, 2019;
  • provide a minimum of 35 hours per week;
  • not start before receiving formal approval by the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour;
  • not displace or replace permanent employees on layoff, parental leave, sick leave or in a part-time position;
  • not convert a part-time position to a full-time position; and,
  • not already be funded by another federal or provincial government job creation program.

Financial Support:

  • For the non-profit sector and First Nations communities, 100% of minimum wage for 35 hours a week will be subsidized for up to twelve (12) weeks.
  • For the private sector and municipalities, 50% of minimum wage for 35 hours a week will be subsidized for up to twelve (12) weeks.
  • Includes Mandatory Employment Related Costs (MERCs): Employment Insurance (EI), Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) and vacation pay.
  • Employers can hire up to four (4) students who have a SEED voucher.
  • 100% of the wage subsidy will be provided upfront at the beginning of the contract.

No referrals will be sent to the employer. The list of approved employers will be shared with students until positions are filled. The employer may, at any time in the process, request to have their name removed from the list.
